No other wine region in California attracts as much attention as Napa Valley.

For many who visit San Francisco, wine tasting is a must. Nearby Napa has more than 400 wineries, from family-owned wineries to large, state-of-the-art establishments. If you have the opportunity while you are in the Bay Area, here are ten wineries that are open to the public for tasting. Arch & Tower

Robert Mondavi recently opened a luxurious wine-tasting experience in the historical Borreo Building on the Napa River. At Arch & Tower, explore Robert Mondavi's extensive wine collection and food pairings like their Legends Lunch, which expertly pairs their wines with a delicious three-course menu. Or pick up some of their delicious provisions, which can be taken to go and enjoyed as you please. With so many indoor and outdoor spaces, mouthwatering eats, and world-renowned wines, Arch & Tower is set to become a staple of the downtown Napa experience.

Corison Winery

987 St. Helena Hwy, Saint Helena, CA 

Cathy Corison is a living legend, and she is revered by the San Francisco wine professional community, collectors, and consumers. Their Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon and Kronos Vineyard are stunning examples of this iconic grape. Still, one of the best-kept secrets is the dry gewurztraminer from a 30-year-old vineyard in the Anderson Valley.

Chateau Montelena Winery

1129 Tubbs Lanes, Calistoga, CA

Chateau Montelena captured the world's attention when its 1973 chardonnay won the Paris Wine Tasting or "Judgement of Paris" in 1976. Although chardonnay remains one of the longest-produced wines in California, lately the Estate cabernet sauvignon wine has garnered most of the press attention for Montelena products.

Freemark Abbey

3022 St. Helena Highway North, St. Helena, CA

Freemark Abbey was one of the few significant wineries in Napa in the late 1960s. The cabernet sauvignon from The Bosche Vineyard and Sycamore Vineyard (which makes wine biodynamically) are outstanding and have great potential to achieve aged wine.

Grgich Hills Estate

1829 St. Helena Hwy, Rutherford, CA

Founded in 1977 by Mike Grgich, who won the legendary "Judgement of Paris" the previous year when he worked at Chateau Montelena, Grgich Hills has a bias towards cool microclimate wines, which can be drunk young. While chardonnay is the pinnacle of production, their zinfandel and cabernet sauvignon are among the best on Highway 29.

Heitz Wineries

436 St. Helena Hwy, St. Helena, CA

Heitz cabernet sauvignon is one of California's most unique, long-lived, and delicious wines. However, other wines, such as their organically grown sauvignon blanc and grignolino, are also delicious.

Joseph Phelps Vineyards

200 Taplin Road, St. Helena, CA

Joseph Phelps was completely renovated in 2014, making this fantastic place even more idyllic. His wine selection includes sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, and syrah; but the cabernet-based blend, Insignia, is Phelps' hallmark.

Saintsbury Winery

1500 Los Carneros Avenue, Napa, CA

Since 1980, Saintsbury has been a leader in pinot noir and chardonnay production in Carneros. In addition to the Carneros bottling establishment, it has several pinot noir vineyards and an always refreshing rosé wine.

Spottswoode Winery

1902 Madrona Avenue, St. Helena, CA

Spottswoode released its first cabernet sauvignon in 1982, and each vintage has already become a collector's item. Today, they make four wines: their famous sauvignon blanc, the Lydenhurst cabernet sauvignon, and the Field Brook syrah from the Sonoma Coast.

Storybook Mountain Vineyards

3835 Highway 128, Calistoga, CA

Storybook Mountain makes excellent zinfandel wine from the Mayacamas Mountains, as well as small productions of viognier, cabernet sauvignon and a magnificent red wine blend, Antaeus. Zin gris and cabernet rosé wines are delicious for summer.
